New High Frequency Dual Serial Input PLL Synthesizers from Fujitsu Microelectronics Provide Ultra Low Supply Current, Industry’s Smallest Package

New MB15F76UL, F74UL ideal for wireless LANs, broadband wireless access designs

San Jose, CA, December 12, 2002 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA), a leading supplier of advanced devices for wireless communications applications, today introduced two new dual serial input PLL frequency synthesizers for wireless LANs and broadband wireless access designs.

“These dual serial input PLLs provide the low power and small form factor required by the new generation of wireless network designs, broadband wireless access and ISM band applications,᾿ said Keith Horn, FMA’s vice president of marketing. “These new PLL frequency synthesizers deliver maximum operating times at high operating frequencies, with minimal power consumption.᾿

Both new devices – the MB15F76UL and MB15F74UL – support all major wireless LAN standards, including 802.11a and 802.11b. Each incorporates a low-noise phase comparator; a balanced charge pump; dual-modulus prescalers for the PLLs; and programmable reference, main and swallow counters. The devices are designed to implement local oscillators for the up-and-down conversion sections of wireless transceivers and receivers.

The charge pump delivers output current with 1.5mA or 6mA, selectable using its own supply pin. In the power-saving mode, the current of each device measures just 0.1 microamps (typical) and 10 mA (maximum). Each device also allows for lock detection and phase comparator output monitoring.

The MB15F76UL offers 6GHz and 1.5GHz RF/RF prescalers. The typical supply current is 9 mA at 3V; the supply voltage ranges from 2.7V to 3.6V. The MB15F74UL provides RF/RF 4GHz and 2GHz, with a supply current of only 9 mA. The IF and RF sections of the MB15F76UL include a ¼ divider.

“The high operating frequency of these new devices eliminates the need for frequency doublers in many systems,᾿ said Stephanos Thomopoulos, FMA’s marketing manager for wireless products. “The result is much lower overall system cost and a simpler architecture.᾿

Pricing and Availability
The new PLL synthesizers are housed in a 20-pad Bump Chip Carrier™ (BCC) package that measures just 3.4 mm x 3.6 mm x 0.55 mm. They are available now at prices of $3 each in 1,000-unit quantities. To aid performance evaluation, optimization and system design, Fujitsu offers development kits for these devices.
