"All Systems Go" for the Technology Infrastructure at IAAF Championships
Digital network ready to capture world records
Edmonton, August 1, 2001 — The timing and telecommunications infrastructure for Edmonton 2001, the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, have officially 'gone live' in preparation for the opening ceremonies on Friday, August 3rd.
Organizing the technology activities for staging this prestigious sporting event has been the responsibility of George Irwin, Director of Management Consulting with DMR Consulting, who is working on loan as Director of Technology for Edmonton 2001. DMR Consulting, a subsidiary of Fujitsu Limited, is a National Supplier of the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics.
Mr. Irwin is specifically responsible for sourcing, implementing and maintaining the entire IT infrastructure. This includes everything from the laser sensors on the start/finish lines to the cable and wireless access networks that will allow journalists and officials in over 170 countries to broadcast the results via the electronic and print media.
Mr. Irwin says, "the multiple technical standards and a diversity of software languages have added to the challenge of ensuring that all technical systems run smoothly during the Championships. The IT infrastructure includes applications and hardware from Italy, Great Britain, Japan, the United States and Canada. The diversity of time zones, cultures and third party relationships has added a significant level of complexity to the project."
A diverse group of technology partners is supplying the necessary equipment. They include Seiko Corp. (timing equipment), Epson Inc. (results equipment), Telus Corp. (telecommunications and networking facilities), Sony Corp. (consumer electronics products) and Ikon Office Solutions Inc. (office automation equipment). Much of this mission critical equipment, such as the timing and results network, arrived in Edmonton during the past few weeks.
The 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics are being held in Edmonton on August 3–12, 2001. The Championships are the world's premier track and field competition and third largest sporting event — after the Summer Olympic Games and World Cup Soccer - based on a television viewing audience of four billion. Edmonton 2001 marks the first time the Championships will be held in North America. They are expected to attract 2,000 athletes competing in 24 men's and 22 women's athletic events as well as 800 journalists and 500,000 spectators.
