Fujitsu Laboratories of America Announces New Demand Response System Framework
Simplifies residential participation in DR programs by enabling seamless control of Internet of Things (IoT) devices

DR programs from utility companies, which are usually based on specific end-user devices, often fail to attract program participation as customers prefer to have a choice in their product purchase. Hardware based home gateways that enable communication between multiple devices and backend servers could be utilized to increase DR program adoption but require technical expertise for installation and maintenance.
The new demand response system framework from Fujitsu Laboratories of America, which is based on an easily-installed mobile app, works as a software gateway and provides informative, automated features to enhance customer engagement. By implementing appropriate DR control logic including choosing a program for the curtailment request, selecting participants in an event, and dispatching an event, it can support multiple DR programs including ones that are incentive-based and time-based. Incentive-based programs enable utilities to directly modify demand thru direct control of end devices and time-based programs limit over baseline usage and reduce demand during certain peak times.
“The advances in alternative sources of power generation coupled with greater heterogeneity in home and business appliances and devices have created the need for innovative solutions for DR program management”, said Masayuki Kato, CEO of Fujitsu Laboratories of America. “Through our Demand Response System Framework we expect to enable efficient and stable DR operation at our customers while increasing program participation and customer satisfaction”.
The prototype mobile app DR client, which is currently under limited release for proof of concepts and early access testing, provides the customer with a unified user interface for a series of tasks for DR participation, including browsing of DR event details, sending opt-in/out decision to the DR server, control of IoT devices based on the DR curtailment requests, and periodic monitoring and reporting of device status. The burden of adjusting multiple appliances during DR events is relieved through automated and centralized control enabled by the app, which results in the improved customer experience and thus encourage their DR participation. Finally, it obviates the need for non-scalable conventional one-way communication channels with customers including paper bill, web portal, email, SMS and phone calls.
