Fujitsu and Crystal IT Partner to Deliver Next-Generation Authentication & Logical Access Control for Workstation Security

Joint Solution Integrates PalmSecure Biometric Technology and Active RFID Authentication to Provide Enhanced, Real Time Endpoint Security without Passwords

Fujitsu Frontech Limited,Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc.

Foothill Ranch, CA and Dallas, TX - ASIS 2010, October 13, 2010

Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc., a leading provider of IT-based business solutions, including advanced technology products, biometric security, and digital media solutions, today announced the integration of its award-winning PalmSecure™ palm vein biometric authentication technology with the Crystal IT Avert™ Access Control system. The joint solution combines biometrics and RFID technologies to deliver unmatched endpoint security for individual workstations, preventing unauthorized user access, protecting propriety information, and eliminating passwords, all while reducing administrative costs and ensuring regulatory compliance. The Fujitsu PalmSecure technology will be showcased at the Fujitsu booth #4412 at ASIS International 56th Annual Seminar and Exhibits (ASIS 2010), taking place October 12-14, 2010 at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.

“At a time when internal security breaches are surpassing external threats to corporate and government networks, the need for comprehensive authentication and access control has never been greater,” said Vic Herring, vice president of sales and marketing, Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc. “The integration of the PalmSecure technology with Avert Access Control provides enterprises with a superior level of endpoint security for individual workstations and the network at large while streamlining password management processes. Together we are helping customers protect their information and intellectual property with the most innovative authentication and access control tools available today.”

The Fujitsu PalmSecure technology is an identity management tool with software that seamlessly integrates with third-party access control solutions. The PalmSecure sensor uses a near-infrared light to capture a person’s palm vein pattern, generating a unique biometric template that is matched against pre-registered users’ palm vein patterns. This advanced, contactless technology rapidly generates highly accurate authentication that is virtually impossible to forge, leaves no biometric trace behind and produces extremely low false-positive and false-negative rates. The PalmSecure technology is deployed worldwide in a range of vertical markets, including finance/banking, healthcare, education and government.

The Crystal IT Avert Access Control system leverages both PalmSecure biometrics and active RFID technologies to provide two-factor authentication and access control for individual workstations. A radio frequency (RF) badge is assigned to each individual user and the user’s palm is scanned. Vein patterns are recognized, encrypted, assigned and stored along with the user’s badge information. When a user requests access to a workstation, his/her badge and palm vein information are checked against stored information for registered users. If the badge and biometric signature are authenticated, the terminal unlocks. By utilizing PalmSecure technology for authentication, users are no longer required to remember passwords, thereby eliminating threats posed by misplaced passwords and reducing cost associated with creating and re-assigning new log-in credentials.

In addition, Avert Access Control meets the next generation of access control protocols by going beyond simply granting initial access to actually oversee and manage user sessions in real time. When an active user walks away from a workstation, the session is terminated automatically and the workstation locks without the need for any user intervention. Upon return and re-authentication, that user’s previous screen reappears without interruption. If a different authorized user approaches the workstation in the interim and authenticates their presence with a biometric signature, the previous user is logged out and the computer will log in the new authorized user. This dynamic security layer eliminates the risk of significant network and information exposure by ensuring that unattended systems, sessions and applications are never left open and unsecure. The result is an access control solution that meets and exceeds current regulatory compliance mandates.

“Crystal IT identified deficiencies in first-generation access control systems and developed a unique solution utilizing best-in-class technologies that not only grant access, but also continue to validate user’s presence throughout a given session,” said Johl J Kennedy, co-founder and CIO of Crystal IT. “The result is access control that actually controls access in real time and on an ongoing basis.”

“To ensure unauthorized access to individual workstations and corporate data, the responsibility of locking unattended systems and managing passwords should be taken out of users’ hands and placed in the technology where it belongs,” said Frederick N. Kloecker, co-founder and CEO of Crystal IT. “The combination of industry-leading Avert Access Control and the Fujitsu PalmSecure biometric technology offers organizations a level of security that is hard to match and almost impossible to replicate. Together, we are helping our customers meet a critical need for strong authentication, comprehensive access control and compliance with a host of industry regulations while simplifying the security process and improving employee workflow.”

Crystal IT also offers an enterprise-level central management server. As a stand-alone appliance, this component integrates each of the workstations containing endpoint security modules into one seamless solution, providing IT staff comprehensive control over users’ access. This server component stores all configuration information, including biometric signatures and RF proximity badge data for the user, on the Domain level and makes it available anywhere on the network Every time an endpoint-secured workstation is accessed, the user’s palm vein signature is stored and precise details of the log-on event are recorded, stored and may be printed for management reporting purposes.
