Fujitsu's Legacy Modernisation Service
System Z™ Migration Options
Fujitsu is a leading provider of customer-focused information technology and communications solutions for the global marketplace.
Fujitsu’s Legacy Modernisation Services enable organisations to leverage the years of investment in software application assets; deliver more from IT budgets and reduce the risk of implementing new technologies.
Challenges
In today’s business environment, it is vital to know when to adopt new technology and when to keep current applications in place.
The challenge is to understand when maintaining business in an existing environment is more painful than migrating to an improved one.
Quite frequently companies run into technology barriers imposed by the continued use of ageing IT infrastructure regardless of the platform they are using.
Although there are many ways to integrate new applications with existing legacy applications, organisations struggle with achieving the level of flexibility and time to market they desire in today’s rapidly changing business environment.
For those organisations considering migrating application workloads from one environment to another, Fujitsu’s Legacy Modernisation Services can:
- Accelerate transition to a new IT environment;
- Reducing the risk of unforeseen and costly hurdles;
- Create significant savings through reduced operating expenses; and
- Increase functionality for a significant competitive advantage.
Strategies
Fujitsu’s Legacy Modernisation Strategies around the zSeries can be split into three separate options. These options are suitable for different client with different strategies, drivers, risks and pain points.
Option 1 - Migration from system Z
This is the option to either the removal or hollowing out of the system Z.
- The removal of the system Z infrastructure involves the migration or decommissioning of all of the systems from the Z Series™ machines, allowing for the machine to be turned off and removed completely.
- The hollowing out of the system Z infrastructure involves the migration or decommissioning of some of the systems from the Z Series machines, allowing for a reduction in size and license costs or an increase in the head room available for the remaining systems
Option 2 – Migration to system Z (z/Linux).
- This is the option to consolidate the system running on many midrange servers to one z Series, allowing for saving in speed, space, power and resources required to service the infrastructure
Option 3 – Migration from z/OS™ to z/Linux.
- This is the option to utilise the cost saving in running z/Linux on the System Z infrastructure by moving systems or even parts of systems from the z/OS operating system to z/Linux.
Each of the above options is described in more detail in specific brochures available on our Web Site.
The first step is to understand which options are the most suitable and feasible for your organisations circumstances, this involves the gathering of information about your current systems, pain points, desired targets and company technology & business policies. It is possible that ‘business and usual” or “totally rewrite’ or any of a dozen or so options are right for you. Just because our program is called legacy modernisation does not blinker us other options.
Should a migration be agreed on as the best alternative the following strategies are considered essential for undertaking a successful legacy modernisation project:
- Understanding the scope of the project;
- The resources and skills impacted and required to support the strategy;
- The level of risk involved in the project;
- The goals, including short, medium and long term of the organisation; and
- The level of complexity and commitment involved by all parties in implementing the strategy.

Some of the major benefits or investigating the suitable options and then undertaking a Fujitsu Legacy Modernisation can be:
