Fujitsu Sets the Standard for Green IT

It’s the latest trend – jumping onto the environmental bandwagon to promote a greener approach to IT. But few, if any, of the companies now loudly promoting their green initiatives can display an environmental pedigree as lengthy or distinguished as Fujitsu’s.

It’s more than 15 years since Fujitsu formulated its Environmental Protection Program, which outlines the company’s basic approach to environmental activities around four key areas - the environmental impact of our products, our factories, our solutions and our people.

In recognition of its Environmental Protection Program, Fujitsu has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index every year since its inception in 1999.

We are also helping Australian and New Zealand organisations to develop and manage their own sustainable Green IT initiatives through our new consulting service offering. As part of this we have developed a white paper called Green IT – Delivering Business Sustainability, which is downloadable from our website on www.au.fujitsu.com.

Fujitsu recognises that environmental protection is a vitally important business issue. We are committed to “making every activity green”, which is why we were the first company to introduce commercial notebook PC models with an environmentally friendly corn-starch based plastic housing.

We understand that our impact is limited to the extent that we can engage the involvement and support of our staff. Environment is positioned as one of the company’s five core values and we regularly implement initiatives aimed at raising the environmental awareness of each and every employee.

For example, an employee-prompted initiative to rejuvenate the forests of South-East Asia has led to the planting of more than 1,000,000 trees since 1998 and numerous other community-based activities across the APAC region.

Of course, as big as we are, Fujitsu alone can have only a limited impact. However, by involving our business and supply partners, we can extend the benefits of our environmental approach through greener supply chain management and other environmental initiatives.

All of our suppliers are asked to adhere to the Fujitsu Group Green Procurement Direction, which requires them to establish an Environmental Management System, to stop using specified hazardous substances and to reduce energy consumption.

We monitor the progress of each supplier and in 2006 achieved a 100 per cent green procurement ratio. By requiring our suppliers worldwide to comply with such strict standards, we are making a significant contribution to environmental protection.

We are also reducing CO2 emissions by introducing more efficient distribution procedures such as revised truck transportation routes and joint-transportation with other companies. In fiscal 2006, our CO2 emissions due to energy consumption were around 1,100,000 tonnes, which was 31 per cent lower than in 2000.

Fujitsu’s manufacturing plants, headquarters and branch offices all operate according to ISO14001, the international standard for environmental management systems. We perform environmental accounting and publish an annual sustainability report in addition to our annual report.
