Fujitsu Australia’s Malaga data centre upgraded to four-star energy efficiency rating

The NABERS energy rating is calculated based on power usage effectiveness (PUE), namely the management of energy and carbon emissions in a data centre compared to others in the data centre market. Results are then communicated via a simple six-star rating scale, where one star represents poor performance, and three stars is the average. Previously rated at 3.5 stars, a range of energy-saving measures have been implemented at Malaga over the last 12 months leading to the increased rating, including lighting upgrades and air conditioning efficiency measures.

Mike Foster, Chief Executive Officer at Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand said, “The NABERS rating underlines Fujitsu’s commitment to achieving its sustainability vision, which ultimately flows on to energy saving benefits passed on to our customers. In 2013, Fujitsu was the first company to be awarded a NABERS certification for its Noble Park data centre. In 2016, it became the first and is still the only Australian technology company to certify and publicly disclose the energy and carbon performance of its entire data centre portfolio using the NABERS energy rating tool. Fujitsu was also acknowledged earlier this year by NABERS for demonstrating leadership in sustainability by using the NABERS Energy for data centres rating tool.”

NABERS National Program Manager, Carlos Flores, said “The achievement of a four-star NABERS Energy rating demonstrates Fujitsu’s ongoing commitment to increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Fujitsu has been an early mover in the adoption of NABERS, being the first to achieve a NABERS for data centres rating, and the first to certify and disclose their entire portfolio. Starting in 2017, Fujitsu Australia embarked on a AUD$66.5 million data centre upgrade program to meet the demands of the market and customer uptime expectations. This upgrade will further improve and standardise the performance, resilience, and reliability of its enterprise data centres in Western Sydney, Noble Park, and Malaga. The Malaga data centre upgrade is specifically aimed at improving the resilience of the data centre site, particularly its electrical infrastructure.

Fujitsu consulted with the Uptime Institute on the design of the Malaga data centre, to ensure the upgrade achieves Tier IV as a design and constructed facility. The procurement of the plant and all equipment is now complete. Construction works are due to begin in January 2019 and the project is on schedule to be completed in June 2019.

Fujitsu aims to meet its goal of becoming more energy efficient by developing technologies that lead to a reduction in emissions, lessening the impact of the ICT sector and decreasing operational costs for Fujitsu customers.
