Banksia Foundation acknowledges Fujitsu with Environmental Award for Leading in Sustainability – Setting the Standard for Large Organisations

Fujitsu, a leading provider of ICT business solutions, today announced it has won the ‘Banksia Environmental Award for Leading in Sustainability – Setting the Standard for Large Organisations’ award, in what is regarded as the most prestigious environmental awards program in Australia. With this award the Banksia Foundation has acknowledged Fujitsu’s long term commitment to sustainability and measurable achievements.

The judges commented that: “This was an extremely impressive entry, with compelling evidence that supports the integration of sustainability principles into the corporate culture. The breadth and scale of the [Fujitsu] program is comprehensive with results being reflected both internally and externally. Fujitsu has strong environmental credentials with the potential to influence significant energy and greenhouse gas reduction with customers.”

Alison Rowe, Global Executive Director Sustainability, Fujitsu, said: “Sustainability is a guiding principle for how Fujitsu works with customers and within society as a whole. Fujitsu has continued to develop its response to sustainability in the face of the Global Financial Crisis and negativity from some sectors of the economy. Local expertise, backed by global commitment to ICT sustainability, has seen us rise to lead by example with a sustainability focus. Our Green IT product and service portfolio is shaping the Green IT landscape. We are on target to achieve our ambitious goal of reducing GHG emissions worldwide by 15 million tons over the four year period 2008 to 2012,” Rowe said.

Rowe sees that with the introduction this year of the broad-reaching Carbon Tax legislation, Australia has greater certainty as to its environmental responsibilities: “I believe that Australia is over ‘green hype’ and that Australian organisations are looking for partnerships with companies that approach sustainability in a genuine manner in order to achieve real and meaningful sustainability outcomes. Fujitsu is leading the way in demonstrating how sustainability is good for business.”

Fujitsu Australia & New Zealand is one of the leading subsidiaries in Fujitsu’s rollout of Green IT solutions across the organisation’s worldwide operations. Chris Seale, Director of Sustainability for Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand, said, “It is great to see that organisations in Australia and New Zealand are making the connection between sustainability and good business practice. The prestigious Banksia award caps off broad international acknowledgement of Fujitsu’s continuing quest for improved environmental practices.

Global recognition
In recent weeks Fujitsu’s growing global reputation for environmental excellence has been recognised in international sustainability rankings: IDG’s Computerworld Top 12 Green-IT Vendors and the Newsweek Global Top 500 Green Companies lists. Seale said: “The Banksia, Computerworld and Newsweek award wins in recent weeks have seen us scrutinised by these highly credible judges and recognised for our commitment to progressing the ICT sustainability agenda.”

Fujitsu has now been awarded the No. 1 spot on the Computerworld Top 12 Green-IT Vendors list in both 2010 and 2011, the only company to win twice since the competition’s inception. And Fujitsu achieved 13th in the Newsweek Global Top 500 Green Companies ranking, which places companies based on their actual environmental footprint, management of that footprint and sustainability communications.

In acknowledgement of its world leading green governance and carbon reduction programs, Fujitsu is also highly ranked by Gartner & WWF on “Global Low-Carbon and Environmental Leadership”.
