TransGrid Signs Three-year Optical Networking Supply Agreement with Fujitsu

Sydney, July 15, 2003

NSW high-voltage electricity carrier TransGrid has signed a three-year, multimillion-dollar agreement with Fujitsu Australia for the supply of SDH fibre-optic networking equipment and deployment services.

By entering into a long-term agreement, TransGrid will continue to enjoy access to the latest transmission technology while gaining efficiencies in staff training, spare parts and support processes as well as reducing TransGrid's own internal infrastructure development costs.

In addition, the commitment will allow Fujitsu and TransGrid to develop high-quality working relationships at multiple levels.

Fujitsu has supplied all of TransGrid's SDH transmission network equipment for more than two years. The company won the tenders for stages one and two of TransGrid's multimillion-dollar project to upgrade its 1,500km signal network, which controls distribution of electricity across the NSW power grid, to fibre-optic technology. TransGrid's statewide network could also be used to provide high-bandwidth services in rural areas, making it potentially valuable community asset.

According to TransGrid Chief Executive, David Croft, "Effective telecommunications is essential in a major electricity transmission network. The transfer of our core telecommunications network from the older microwave technology to a high-capacity optical system was a very important project and we were pleased that Fujitsu worked with us to achieve the best possible outcome."

"Fujitsu is delighted to be able to extend its relationship with TransGrid," said Fujitsu CEO Nori Karasuda. "From an industry perspective, this agreement also highlights the fact that there are a number of utilities and other non-carrier organisations with large, mission-critical telecommunications systems that are continuing to innovate and grow their networks."

TransGrid's NSW power network consists of more than 12,000km of transmission lines, 81 major substations and power station switchyards, 83 microwave radio sites and 495 power line carrier links. Its interconnections with Victorian and Queensland networks make the TransGrid high-voltage (HV) transmission system an important component of one of the largest HV AC grid networks in the world.

Since November 2001, Fujitsu has also provided IT outsourcing services to TransGrid.
