Revolutionary technology becomes reality - Fujitsu ships Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC

Fujitsu Australia Limited

Sydney, November 07, 2002

Capitalising on more than a decade of experience in designing and manufacturing pen-enabled computers, Fujitsu Limited and its group affiliates today announced the global availability of the Fujitsu Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC. The announcement comes in conjunction with the launch of Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, a new version of Microsoft Windows XP Professional, with an extensive and integrated suite of utilities such as handwriting and voice recognition.

With more than a decade of experience designing and manufacturing pen-based computers, Fujitsu is the only tablet PC manufacturer to have already amassed a wealth of knowledge in pen computing. Continuing this successful tradition, the Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC blends quality and reliability into a form factor that meets the needs of business professionals. This innovative computer weighs approximately 1.48kg and measures an ultra-slim 22mm thin, making the Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC one of the thinnest and lightest tablet PCs to date.

Following the successful launch of the Fujitsu LifeBook notebook range into the Australian market last year, the introduction of the Fujitsu Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC completes Fujitsu PC Australia's mobile and wireless computing product suite.

"Fujitsu has dominated the tablet PC market sector for the past 10 years," said Fujitsu Australia's Chief Executive, Phil Kerrigan. "The arrival of the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system brings added credibility to pen computing. It opens up this niche sector market to new competition and growth by raising awareness of the benefits and flexibility of tablet PC technology," he said.

Fujitsu's experience within the pen tablet PC marketplace is a major advantage for potential enterprise customers looking to adopt this technology. The Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC reflects Fujitsu's intimate understanding of the form factor down to every detail - from its advanced display technology to its weight balance, heat dissipation and application buttons.

"The Fujitsu Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC is an exciting design, which fits Microsoft's vision for Tablet PC as a tool for unlocking business potential," said Danny Beck, Product Marketing Manager, Tablet PC, Microsoft Australia. "The Fujitsu Tablet PC makes it easy for customers to blend the simplicity of pen and paper with the functionality of a personal computer - enabling customers to use their computers in more ways and places than ever before."

The Stylistic ST4110 Tablet PC, the first offering in the series, is a powerful, no-compromise PC which incorporates an Ultra Low Voltage Mobile Intel Pentium III Processor 800MHz - M, which supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology. A shock mounted 40GB hard drive adds durability and up to 768MB of system memory provides the highest performance possible. As an Intel Pentium processor-based machine, the Stylistic ST4110 Tablet PC satisfies the stringent demands of corporations by creating a solution that offers reliability, uncompromising performance and increased battery life.

Made in Japan, the Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC provides the quality and reliability for which the Fujitsu mobile computing range has become renowned.

The innovative design of the Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC offers maximum flexibility, allowing it to adapt to a variety of usage patterns. Unlike traditional PCs, the Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC can be used in places where traditional notebook PCs are not practical or widely accepted. Users can carry their Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC like a notepad to enter data, take notes or access information unobtrusively while on their feet or in a meeting. They can also use their Tablet PC as a notebook or desktop computer by either complementing it with a keyboard in the Fujitsu portfolio case or placing it on their desk in the optional Stylistic ST Series Tablet Dock.

The optional Tablet Dock features all the ports users need to connect desktop peripherals, as well as a modular bay to accommodate an optical device such as a DVD/CD-RW combination drive. A quick release mechanism, combined with the unit's tight integration with the operating system, allows for instant removal of the unit from its dock, giving users the ability to take their Tablet PC with them at a moment's notice.

In addition to pen or keyboard entry, the Fujitsu Tablet PC was designed with several application buttons unique to Tablet PCs, allowing the user to launch key applications and navigate through documents and application and file menus with the touch of a button.

The Stylistic ST4110 Tablet PC incorporates a bright 10.4" XGA TFT display, which can be easily rotated between landscape and portrait mode to optimise application viewing without rebooting the system. Embedded in the display is an active digitiser. This sophisticated technology enhances the rich, smooth inking capabilities of the unit, while the ultra-fine resolution delivers a crisp and clear display to easily view written text and graphics. This combination is essential to complete common business tasks such as check email, access electronic files, take handwritten notes, annotate documents, wirelessly share information, read electronic publications or quickly and accurately enter data virtually anywhere - greatly improving user efficiency and productivity.

As one of the first truly mobile PCs, the Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC has the ability to stay connected at all times. Fujitsu has included industry-standard IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN capabilities with advanced security protocols. This allows users to take the Tablet PC from meeting to meeting and still maintain a high-level of productivity throughout their workday. Plus, the Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC is powered by a high-capacity Lithium ion (six-cell) battery to give users extended untethered computing time. For those at their desks, Fujitsu also outfits the Stylistic ST Series Tablet PC with both modem and Ethernet connections.
