Fujitsu partners with Corning Cable Systems for Nava-1 network

Fujitsu Australia Limited

Sydney, December 20, 2001

Fujitsu Australia announced today that it has selected Melbourne-based Corning Cable Systems (Corning) to supply the fibre optic cable and hardware accessories for the Nava-1 terrestrial fibre-optic system from Perth to Melbourne via Adelaide.

The 3,700km of fibre optic cable required for the high-capacity Nava-1 network will be manufactured locally by Corning in its Clayton-Melbourne factory.

Nava Networks had previously awarded Fujitsu the role of prime contractor for the supply of equipment, and the implementation of the Nava-1 network, a high capacity DWDM-optical system that will link Singapore, Jakarta and Perth using submarine cable, and Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney using terrestrial cable.

The cable will include a combination of standard cable and high-strength cable for implementation in the terrestrial route across some of the harshest conditions in the country.

Corning will also be working with the two civil subcontractors - ABB Australia and Downer Engineering, to whom Fujitsu Australia recently awarded civil works contracts. ABB Australia and Downer Engineering will implement the terrestrial component of the Nava-1 network, using Corning's fibre optic cable and hardware accessories.

"We are pleased to have selected Corning as the supplier of fibre optic cable for this important project," said Mr Brian Murphy, General Manager, Telecommunications, Fujitsu Australia Limited. "This adds to the growing list of local suppliers Fujitsu Australia is enlisting on the Nava-1 project."

Corning Cable Systems Managing Director, Mr Rainer Dittrich said: "This is the first such supply partnership with an equipment vendor of its kind since Corning Cable Systems introduced its tip-to-tip cabling system solutions. It reinforces Corning Cable Systems global strategy of positioning itself as an integrated cabling systems company to simplify and expedite the delivery of large complex projects such as Nava-1."
